the theory of relativity

The rhinoceros is a distant cousin of the sick zebra I helped to wash when I was a boy and the circus came to Rimini. My theory about why the zebra was sick is that he didn’t have any sex in his life. How could he feel well? There was, after all, only one zebra in that circus. The rhinoceros is lovesick.
Only one rhinoceros is the same as only one zebra.

breaking the waves

to speak to a subject spoken of, earlier, and at length by ladybird and terrain incognito:
i am now watching the delicious new criterion release of godard's "a woman is a woman" for the first time. jean paul belmondo, in character as alfred lubitsch (!), greets jeanne moreau as herself, and inquires as to the progress of "jules et jim". already there have been mentions within the film of "breathless", "lola", and "shoot the piano player". i think that bertolucci was riffing on this same idea in his "the dreamers" with all his film clips. godard did not need clips to support his intertextual referencing because it was in the time and of the time. bertolucci, i still contend, in a benevolent and generous gesture visually refreshes the memories or freshly educates and entices those who never knew.

time regained

dizzee rascal of terrain cognito and the mercury prize fame has a song called jezebel which has long lived on my computer- well, since january at least. thanks to sasha frere-jones and my freshly cancelled new yorker subscription for helping me put two and two together. i tried- i'm just not a new yorker kind of new yorker. i'll take my literature from novels and my pictures from fashion magazines.
