to speak to a subject spoken of, earlier, and at length by ladybird and terrain incognito:
i am now watching the delicious new criterion release of godard's "a woman is a woman" for the first time. jean paul belmondo, in character as alfred lubitsch (!), greets jeanne moreau as herself, and inquires as to the progress of "jules et jim". already there have been mentions within the film of "breathless", "lola", and "shoot the piano player". i think that bertolucci was riffing on this same idea in his "the dreamers" with all his film clips. godard did not need clips to support his intertextual referencing because it was in the time and of the time. bertolucci, i still contend, in a benevolent and generous gesture visually refreshes the memories or freshly educates and entices those who never knew.
